No Nipping
Starting at an early age, you need to teach your German puppy that nipping your hands or your body and those of other’s is NOT OK. You can do this by always playing with him holding a chew toy. Show him that it is OK to bite the chew toy by not reacting when he does. If he nips your hand, say “Ouch!” and walk away. He will be disappointed that play time is over, and he will learn not to nip you if he wants to enjoy playing with you.
If walking away fails to teach him not to nip, then you need to use restraint to make him associate nipping with being put in a time out. Say “Time out” when he nips and take him to his time-out area. Tie him up on a 2-foot lead for five minutes and ignore him.
Teach your kids and other family members not to tolerate nipping. When they run away, he takes it as an invitation to give chase. Teach your them to stand their ground or to simply say “Ouch” and walk away without running and giggling or screaming.
Also, teach him to take food politely. Teach him the ‘Polite’ command. When you feed him, tell him to be Polite”. Reward him when he takes the food nicely. If he tries to nip, then take the food away and don’t feed it to him.
Keeping your German Shepherd dog occupied is a good way to help him get over nipping. Nipping can be a big problem, especially if your German Shepherd is in the teething phase of puppyhood. Give him lots of chew toys and bones to keep his mouth busy. Teach him that those toys are acceptable for him to chew on, but he can’t chew on you or other people.
